The Wellesley Institute is joining with the University of Toronto’s Cities Centre to sponsor a day-long forum on inclusionary housing zoning. There has been a near-record number of new homes built in Toronto and other Canadian municipalities in recent years. Only a tiny fraction of them are truly affordable to low and moderate-income households. Even middle-income households are increasingly being squeezed out of private housing markets. Hundreds of municipalities across the United States are using inclusionary zoning to create affordable homes. We want to hear about that extensive experience and learn about the strengths and limitations of inclusionary zoning. After hearing practical details from municipal and non-governmental experts from the U.S., this forum will look at the possibilities of applying the American experience to Canadian municipalities.
